Or, Public Displays of Absurdity.
My downstairs neighbors are...vexed by Cordelia's barking. But they have not yet bothered to tell me about it (except for one time, via a note, and then the stipulation was that she not bark incessantly past 11 o clock at night). They have instead called the landlord. I find this offensive. I find this odd. They returned from their holiday last night and called him immediately after I left this morning. Immediately. They demand (via the landlord) that I get a bark collar. I did.
However, I need to do something. I could leave them a note to describe the treatments so far undertaken and say how odd it is that they don't talk to me. But if I write a note it will get angry. And then they will feel themselves above me and disregard it. So I'm trying to think of less verbal things to do instead, such as:
bake them a pie. Leave it on their doormat, unexplained.
bake a lot of pies, or some pies and some quick breads.
send flowers, casseroles and condolences and/or get well cards.
Now, I understand that this is dangerously close to Vivien Haigh-Wood pouring melted chocolate down T.S. Eliot's mail slot at work. But I am not very rational when I'm angry. Anyhow I'm not sure why completely unexplained displays don't happen more often.
