Relativists and interpreters

I think this is the philosopher who lectured at SJC in the spring of my senior year. He seemed to be kind of Davidsonian. All I remember is the opening (tragic 9/11 story) and the fact that it was about "charitable interpretation." And that people--specifically the Straussians who came to dinner--were very worried that he might be a relativist.
