I hate prospective first lady speeches; not because they play into the "supportive wife" stereoptype, but because it seems to be a prerequisite for political life that one have a traditional family, or at least that one be married. I've never exactly seen the point of marriage; and most of my friends don't come from traditional families, so the argument can't be that it's an unqualified good for children. It unnerves me that a way of life that doesn't seem all that important (or, at least, no more important than any other way of life) is required of someone in order for that person to be respectable enough to legislate, direct, or judge on matters of importance to the public--which, I hope, includes more variations on American life than that.
