A Motion for More Sexual Orientations
Nov. 30th, 2007 11:00 pmToday in my sections we talked about their latest assignment--write an essay on whether or not they believe they could voluntarily change their sexual orientation. No one seemed to think it was possible. People do spontaneously change, they thought, but not quite voluntarily.
It occurred to some (or I think it did, because it occurred to me) that there might be more accurate ways of dividing sexual orientation than along the lines of biological sex. At least, in the sense that sexual orientation is something people discover about themselves, it could vary along any number of lines--physical traits, personality traits, age, emotional needs, aesthetic preferences; possibly more prominently than with biological sex. Some people might feel....invisible sexually, to themselves or others, if the ordinary categories don't resonate with them. So--ahem--here is my plea for more specific categories. For complicated people.
Of course, it's probably no more or less difficult than finding one's place within any sphere of social interactions.
