Yes, those were Mormons (*grimace*)
Mar. 17th, 2005 02:42 amConsolation: a lot of people are descended from Mormons. That was just what they wanted. That's why they have such careful records: to demonstrate their success. And there are clear evolutionary reasons why those strategies were appropriate. And I want to explain away their 1st person beliefs about God and prophets why? I don't really know. As much as I've made lately of the irreducibility of 1st person to 3rd person beliefs (or motives or drives or whatever they are at the subpersonal level), it's intolerably incongruous to see religion tweaked to fit external circumstances. One just wants to shake the believers. Perhaps I would be happy if they said, "I know the probable biological reasons for what I'm doing, but I'm doing it anyway." Perhaps what bothers me is that religious accounts purport to be 3rd person in a way, when other 3rd person accounts are better, not to mention less easily confused with our reasons. Then again, I could just be irremediably prejudiced.
Here are some Mormons to whom I am related. They're Canadian.
I am also allegedly related to (Sir) Ralph Lane, of the first expedition to Roanoke. But, according to him, he went back to England.
