An image in Dachshunds for Dummies shows a shorthair Byronlike atop a rock, and bears the caption: "The dachshund is an intelligent and pensive animal"--or something in that vein. That section also, wisely, distinguishes the intelligence of breeds who think for themselves from that of breeds who are easily trained.
